Because Sundays are an awesome day to be out and about, we headed towards the green and gorgeous Oakland Hills for a bike ride away from the crowds. Step 1 to being a Californian is realizing that you will pretty much NEVER be away from the crowds! Now, what you can do, is be away from large groups of noisy people to be closer to smaller groups of noisy people who like to be outdoors :) The Joaquin Miller trail is located in the Oakland Hills, a quick 10 mins drive from downtown (if you're driving fast...). Parking is at the side of the road in the Joaquin Miller park. Most of the instructions for where to start to where to can be found here on MTB Project. The trail is extremely confusing to follow, with poor signs along the entire way. The park has several trails criss crossing the bike trail, one of which, led us down a ridiculously steep path. So, before you do this bike ride, I highly recommend downloading the MTB Project App on your phone. The trails, however, were amazing! I had the best time! I would recommend turning around before the Cinderella trail if you're a beginner, but definitely go for it if you're up for an awesome challenge! This was my first experience on a single track bike path, and it was mind blowing. There were some really great narrow sections surrounded by trees. The Sequoia Bay View trail had lovely views of the bay and San Francisco. And to top it all, the area is pet friendly, so Snow could accompany us for a sweaty workout. After the bike ride, I headed down to the hot tub in my apartment for a nice soak. My legs were a bit jelly after the bike ride in the sun so 30 mins at the hot tub was perfect for relaxation.
Anyway, super sick trail ride with stunning views and gorgeous scenery. Lookout for people though. There are tons of hikers along the trails, so hiker beware! Usually, the slower traffic considers faster traffic to be a nuisance. So high five some hikers and pass a nice smile along the way! Enjoy this peaceful and wonderful part of the Bay Area.
